Daddi and Mommi's adventoowe in the wilds of NewYewsey

Mommi and Daddi got home late last night and told me all sowts of gweat sowies fwom theiw long long day ..I think they bof got big colds, but said it was all wowf it.
Daddi and his fellow Peace Cowe  Volunteews  at the Plaque dedication   they attended at Wutgews in NewJewsey, whewe they twained 50 yeaws ago to go off to  the unknown

I think they must have been incwedibly bwave( much like us  doggies)..they had to go to a new place whewe evewyone spoke a diffewent language and all alone  twy to leawn how to help hoomans faw fwom them

(btw, my Daddi speaks bootiful Spanish to this day and he, and all of them said, they leawned mowe fwom the hoomans they went to help than the othew way awound.  The Colombians wewe kind and hospitable  and shawed theiw lives wif them)

I have a smilebox wif a bunch of pictoowes fwom theiw day, I hope you enjoy it

They wewe vewy young and idealistic  50 yeaws ago, and fwom what I heaw, they haven't changed much on the inside.
(if you missed the News on NBC, you can see it hewe)

George is shaking hands with Alberto Lleras Camargo, President of Colombia at the Bogota in-country training site at Tibaitata.

Daddi was explaining to me that

Colombia 1 was a Wuwal Community Development Gwoup that wowked with a jointly administewed CAWE-Peace Cowe.  The Volunteews wewe paiwed up (Daddi  wif  Tom Mullins) and assigned to wuwal sites to wowk alongside a govewnment Community Action Pwogram called Accion Comunal and the National Association of Cafetewos, the majow coffee gwowews association of Colombia (know Juan Valdez?). Tom left after six months to go to another site and Daddi stayed  alone with  the locals to help him.

Community Development was fowming local committees to owganize self-help pwojects that benefitted the community and wanged from building woads, bwidges, schools, spowts fields, latwines, water supplies and health centews.
Daddi and his companiewo from Accion Comunal built a new bwidge into town and built a health center with bwicks that the community made.  Evewyone called Daddi "Don Jorge"

(Daddi wif his Colombian countewpawt Faustino Twujillo Mowwales in a photogwaph taken at his site in Fuquene Colombia ....  pictoowe is fwom the awticle in the Satuwday Evening Post)
The awticle: PROFILE OF A PEACECORPSMAN
HOW A YOUNG AMERICAN HELPS THE RESIDENTS OF A  POOR , REMOTE COLOMBIAN VILLAGE HELP THEMSELVES

Thewe awe lots of stowies funny , and some sad, but mommi says  she wouldn't know whewe to stawt

Mommi and Daddi awe totally exhausted, I, ummm, stayed home and slept like an angel and didn't go watewskiing in the Hudson Wivew wif my pals and didn't come home dwipping watew all ovew the apawtment  to dwink hot cawob wif schlag  in theiw company

Wight now, I'm "Cawbo loading"..I heawd we all have to eat lots of sghetti the night befowe the newyawk Mawathon
(I'm wishing all the wunnews the most wondewful day)

OMD OMD this was the bestest of Posts. You must be ever so proud of your dad. My mom saw the thingy on NBC butt when she talked to my dad about it.. we had No Idea that we would know somebuddy (well somebuddy's DAD) who was involved with the Peace Corp.
Congratulations Asta on having such a SPECIAL dad!!

Congrats to the daddie and all that he has done to help those when he was in the Peace Corps. The mom here remembers when that was started. She didn't join up though. I know not only here where your daddie lives but all through his life he has touched many hearts and changed the lives of many. He's a keeper for sure. You did a wonderful job when you adopted your folks.

What a wonderful way to honor those wonderful people, including your very special Dad, for the work they did to help others. We really enjoyed viewing all the photos, Mom says she visited the Rutgers campus many years ago when one of our human siblings was decided on a college choice.

Phantom wants you to save him some pasta - that is ONE thing he loves.

Have a great Sunday.

Oh Asta, that is so totally amazing. Thank you so much for sharing. Your Daddi looks wonderful, such a fine man, inside and out, it's quite clear.
Gail tells me that, before I was born, she had a really lovely lodger here in our house in Scotland, an American student called Naomi, whose parents met in the Peace Corps. She says that Hamish adored Naomi, and she him.

Don Jorge is our HERO!!

You are one lucky pupgirl, sweet Astaroni, to have the adventurous and generous daddi you do! We in GooberStan should erect a plaque of our own commemorating the fact that we even KNOW Don Jorge. He's definitely one of our nation's heroes!

Stella said, "I always knew my Georgie was special!" (like it was some secret only SHE knew or something).

Give some of our juiciest goob smooches to your daddi and to your mommi for snaggin' such a hot tamale for her very own!

Goober love,

This was a most amazing postie, Asta! I just luved learning so much abouts your daddi and that peace corps thing. I think they mighta been even braver 50 years ago than they are now (and the ones now are pretty darn brave, I think). Cuz, well, nobuddy had ever done it before, you know? PLUS my mom says there wasn't such things as cell phones or the interwebz or anything. Only writing letters on PAPER to keep in touch with their family and furends. Can you IMAGINE!? Gosh. You should ask your daddi if he was able to ride a dinosaur while he was there cuz I bet they still had 'em way back when.

What an incredible person your Daddi is to have braved the unknown to help those in need! He is a hero. And you must be so proud!

Your Daddi continues to prove how amazing he is in fighting the battle for his health. You and your Mommi are very strong and loving warriors to stand by his side fighting the good war. Know you are not alone.

Your family and the Luke's and our Angel sheltie and mom's beloved aunt who died after years of pushing back ovarian cancer were some of the important reasons we walked in the 2MillionDog Puppy Up! Walk for Canine and Comparative Oncology Research. You were our inspiration and our strength. Cancer.Touches.Everyone.

We are totally confused. You say you didn't go water skiing. But Eric said he was with you this weekend. And your mommi says you were an angel. And Lacie says she was skiing doubles with you. Where were we? With our heads in the ground? Or maybe underwater bobbing for apples? The important thing is, we are VERY PROUD of Daddi. Very very proud. And we WERE proud of you. Till we read this post and all the comments.

We'll just go poke our heads in the ground again.

The best picture is of you eating spaghetti for the marathon, though.
